My Cushion Crush - First Blog Post

So this is where it all begins.......

Hello I'm Jules & welcome to the very first blog post at My Cushion Crush!!  In this first blog you will learn a bit about me & how My Cushion Crush came to be.

As the name suggest I have a crush on cushions, yep I just looove cushions!!

But cushions are not all that I love.  Most importantly I love my family, but aside from them I love colourful & co-ordinating fabrics, textured & layered looks, inspiring vignettes,  new & old furniture, coastal & relaxed interiors, the Hamptons, photography, styling & anything that is visually pleasing to me.  You could say I love just about everything to do with home décor, styling & decorating.

In following Blog posts I hope to inspire you with ideas & tips on anything & everything to do with creating beautiful spaces for you and your family. Because our home is not just a house but a reflection of who we are & what we love.

I am a wife & mother & together with my husband we have renovated a couple of houses, built some new ones, done some travelling, owned a business & worked in a few too, raised 3 children & became Grandparents.  But it was during an extended illness that I had an epiphany!!

Life is short!!  Too short in fact & I knew that it was crazy to not be doing what made me happy!

What started many years ago as just a few small sewing & upholstery jobs for friends & family has blossomed into my new business. I have always loved to sew & have created anything & everything from roman blinds to flower girl dresses, lampshades to curtains & patchwork quilts.  I have even done some reupholstering of seats & cushions in a couple of caravans too.

But it is my undying love (there you go I have declared it) of cushions that has seen me develop this passion into a business.

I just can't go past a good cushion & I am instantly drawn to the cushion in the furniture showroom completely oblivious to the beautiful furniture that it adorns. I even think I have coined the phrase.....

"my husband will kill me if I come home with another cushion".

So how do you treat this addiction?? By creating beautiful cushions for everyone else to enjoy & lets face it who doesn't love a good cushion??  And that is where the My Cushion Crush story begins.

Firstly, I sourced fabrics that I knew would be robust enough to be used outdoors & beautiful enough for inside too.  I wanted my fabrics to have a designer look & feel to them with an abundance of colours to mix & match. I was lucky enough to find a local fabric supplier that gives me access to over 750 beautiful Designer Fabrics with Super Powers, water resistant, stain resistant & fade resistant.  Mission accomplished!!

Next came many hours developing my website ww.mycushioncrush.com.au  & then I created a Facebook Page (My Cushion Crush) & finally I jumped onto the Instagram wave too.  Social media has been great way to connect not only clients but other online businesses too

Cushions are an easy way to update the look and feel of your home & outdoor spaces.  Change them seasonally or just on a whim, it couldn't be easier!   In fact At My Cushion Crush we've made is super easy for you to order custom made Designer Cushion covers.

Mixing & Matching

August  2015

Mixing & Matching Patterns/Colours

Cushions are the icing to my cake & my favorite way of adding colour & texture to my home.

They are a low cost way of updating that old couch or outdoor area and can be changed at a whim, even seasonally.

But without reason, I just LOVE cushions.
Now you all know of my undying love of cushions, I thought I would share with you my tips for mixing and matching.

It’s definitely an art form that I’m still perfecting & all it takes is a little confidence.

So here we go with a few pointers:

Solid – A cushion that is a solid color with no pattern

Semi Patterned– A cushion with 2 colors and a simple pattern

Highly Patterned– A cushion with 3 or more colors and a complex pattern (this is the pillow(s) that pull everything together).  I also call this the main attraction.

Tip # 1:
Use at least 3 Colors in your palette

I usually (but not always) try to stick to three basic colors & in numbers of 3, 5 or 7 and so on.  I recommend using at least three colors because as it will give visual balance, it is interesting to look at, and it gives you more options when it comes to choosing fabrics.  I wouldn't recommend using more than 5 colors.  It is also important to note that all the colours do not have to match perfectly in shade from cushion to  cushion.  It's ok to have variation of shades as long as they are close in colour & still appealing visually.

Tip #2:
Balance Your Solid Colours & Patterns

Keeping a nice balance between solids, semi-patterned, and highly patterned pillows is important.   You run the risk of your cushions looking “too busy” if you try to do too many patterns, but on the other hand you don't want to look too boring if you choose only solids.

*Handy Hint*  If possible, choose your highly patterned pillow fabrics first.  It is often easier to choose the busier fabric that has an abundance of colors first as it can be very difficult to try and find a highly patterned fabric that pulls together cushions you already have.

Tip #3:
Consider Other Colors within the Room

Consider your curtain color(s), wall color, and any other pops of color in the room when determining the color palette that you will use for your cushions.  When I chose my cushion colours, I look at the room in question, existing furniture & how it relates to other pops of color throughout the house.  If you have at least one item in the room that matches a cushion color, then your cushions should be a nice cohesive fit for the room.

At the end of the day, style is individual & everyone likes things differently, so go with your gut & what works for you.  I hope I have given you some inspiration to do some mixing & matching of your own.  Go forth with "confidence" I say!!
